About this course

Computer games development is a technically and creatively demanding discipline that addresses every stage of the process by which a game is brought into existence, from initial concept and design through programming, asset integration, testing, and deployment. It draws on software engineering, mathematics, graphics programming, artificial intelligence, and game design principles, requiring students to develop both technical depth and creative problem-solving skills. The games industry is one of the largest and most innovative sectors in the global creative economy, and demand for technically skilled developers is strong and growing.

This four-year programme at the University of Westminster includes a foundation year that prepares you for degree-level study, making it accessible whether you lack the right entry qualifications, want to change subject specialism, or are returning to education after an absence. Once into the main degree you will develop the technical and creative skills that professional games development requires, working with modern game engines, programming languages, and the collaborative workflows of professional studio practice. The programme includes a sandwich placement year and a year abroad, alongside embedded work placement opportunities, giving you direct professional experience and international exposure.

Graduates from computer games development programmes work as games programmers, technical artists, AI programmers, gameplay engineers, tools engineers, and QA engineers in games studios of all sizes. The technical skills the degree develops are also transferable to simulation, virtual reality, augmented reality, visualisation, defence and training systems, and a range of other technology sectors that use game development tools and methods.
