About this course

Computer games programming is the technical discipline that brings games to life through code, turning design concepts and artistic assets into playable, responsive, and performant interactive experiences. It draws on computer science fundamentals, including algorithms, data structures, and software architecture, but applies them in the specific and demanding contexts of real-time interactive systems where performance, responsiveness, and creative collaboration are all essential. Games programmers work on everything from physics simulations and rendering pipelines to artificial intelligence, gameplay systems, and network code.

At the University of Gloucestershire this four-year programme includes a year-long work placement within the games industry, immersing you in a professional games studio environment and giving you direct experience of how games are made in a commercial context. This placement is a central feature of the degree and a significant advantage in a competitive industry where professional experience and portfolio work are the primary currency. You will develop skills in programming languages and tools used in games development, study computer graphics, physics, and AI alongside the software engineering principles that underpin professional code, and build games projects that demonstrate your technical range and creative understanding.

Graduates from computer games programming programmes go on to work as gameplay programmers, engine programmers, graphics programmers, AI programmers, tools programmers, and in technical roles across games studios of all sizes. The programming skills developed are also highly transferable into software engineering, simulation, virtual reality, defence, and fintech. The year-long industry placement makes graduates particularly competitive on entry to the market, and many secure employment with their placement studios or through the professional network they build during that year.

Some graduates go on to postgraduate study in games technology, computer science, or AI.
