Computer Networking

Computer networking is the discipline concerned with the design, implementation, management and security of the systems that allow computers and devices to communicate with each other. From the local area networks inside a single building to the global infrastructure of the internet, networking underpins virtually all digital communication and data exchange. As organisations become ever more dependent on connected systems, and as threats to those systems grow more sophisticated, the demand for networking professionals with strong technical knowledge and a security-conscious approach has never been greater.

At the University of the West of Scotland this four-year full-time programme includes a sandwich year, a year abroad and embedded work placement opportunities, giving the degree a strong connection to professional experience alongside its academic content. You will study the fundamental protocols and architectures of computer networks, including how data is transmitted, routed and managed across different types of network. Security is a central concern throughout: you will develop knowledge of network vulnerabilities, defensive architectures, firewalls, intrusion detection, encryption and the principles of secure network design.

Alongside technical networking content, you will develop skills in systems administration, cloud computing, wireless networks and the management of network infrastructure.

The sandwich year and placements give you the chance to work in real networking environments before you graduate, which is important in a field where practical experience with enterprise-scale systems is highly valued by employers. The year abroad adds an international dimension to your technical education.

Graduates pursue careers as network engineers, systems administrators, network security analysts, cloud infrastructure engineers, IT consultants and cybersecurity professionals across every sector that depends on connected systems, which is effectively all of them. Postgraduate study in cybersecurity, network engineering or cloud computing is also an option for those who want to develop specialist expertise.
