About this course

Computer Science and Electronic Engineering is a combination that sits at the intersection of two fundamental disciplines of the modern technological world. Computer science provides the theoretical and practical foundations for understanding computation, algorithms, software systems and the principles underlying every digital application. Electronic engineering contributes expertise in circuits, signals, hardware architecture and the physical devices that make computation possible, from microprocessors and sensors to communications systems and embedded controllers.

Together, they give you an unusually complete picture of how digital technology works, from the hardware layer through to the software that runs on it.

At the University of Liverpool, this three-year full-time programme includes a year abroad and leads to a MEng (Hons) qualification, providing both greater international exposure and a higher level of technical depth than a standard bachelor's degree. You will develop rigorous competence in programming, algorithms, digital systems, signal processing and the design of both hardware and software systems. The programme includes a major group project in which you collectively assign responsibilities and management roles, developing the teamwork, leadership and project coordination skills that engineering employers consistently prioritise.

The MEng structure provides the additional depth and breadth that prepares you for roles demanding the highest level of technical and engineering judgement.

Graduates from Computer Science and Electronic Engineering programmes are in demand across a remarkable range of industries. Software engineering, embedded systems design, telecommunications, robotics, semiconductor design, aerospace and defence, automotive electronics and the rapidly growing field of Internet of Things are all major employers. Many graduates pursue chartered engineer status through the relevant professional engineering bodies, and the degree also provides excellent preparation for doctoral research in areas such as machine learning, signal processing, communications or hardware design.
