About this course

Computer science and music production is a combination that reflects how deeply intertwined computing and music have become. Digital audio workstations, synthesis algorithms, spatial audio processing, generative music systems and machine learning approaches to music creation all require both computational understanding and musical sensibility. At the same time, the music industry depends on software platforms, streaming infrastructure and data analytics that call for technical expertise.

This four-year programme at Liverpool Hope University brings these two disciplines together, and includes a foundation year to support students in building the necessary foundations before progressing into the full degree.

You will develop computing skills across a wide range of areas, including networks, mobile and embedded computing, artificial intelligence, virtual reality and augmented reality, alongside practical and technical skills in music production using professional software and studio approaches. The programme builds your understanding of both how digital systems work and how music is made with them, developing the interdisciplinary competence that employers in the creative technology sector increasingly look for. A placement year and a year abroad extend your professional experience and international perspective, and work placement opportunities are integrated throughout the programme.

Graduates of this combination move into careers that sit at the intersection of technology and creative media. Music technology, sound design, game audio, digital signal processing, audio software development and the technical production roles in recording studios and broadcasting are all natural directions. The computing component also opens paths into software engineering, UX and product design, and creative technology consultancy in the broader digital economy.

Some graduates pursue postgraduate study in music technology, computer science or creative computing, where the combination of skills developed in this programme provides a distinctive foundation.
