About this course

Computer science and physics is a degree that brings together two closely linked disciplines that together illuminate some of the deepest questions about the structure of reality and the nature of computation. Physics is the fundamental science, developing the laws that govern matter, energy, space, and time from the subatomic to the cosmological. Computer science is the study of computation, algorithms, information, and the design of systems that process and communicate data.

The two fields are deeply intertwined: computational methods are indispensable tools in modern physics, from modelling quantum systems to simulating cosmological evolution, while the theoretical foundations of computer science draw on mathematics that physics also inhabits.

At the University of Edinburgh, this degree brings together these two very closely linked subjects and offers an exceptional programme to students with a strong interest in both. You will develop a thorough grounding in the core areas of physics, including classical mechanics, electromagnetism, thermodynamics, quantum mechanics, and condensed matter, alongside core computer science topics including algorithms, data structures, programming, software engineering, and machine learning. The combination equips you to work at the frontier of both fields and at their intersection, where some of the most exciting research in areas such as quantum computing, computational physics, and scientific machine learning is taking place.
