About this course

Computer science with a specialisation in artificial intelligence provides a degree that is both technically rigorous and focused on one of the most consequential fields in contemporary science and technology. The computer science foundation covers programming, algorithms, data structures, software engineering, computer systems and the mathematical underpinnings of the discipline. The AI specialisation extends that foundation into machine learning, neural networks, natural language processing, computer vision, knowledge representation and the techniques that allow systems to learn from data, recognise patterns and make decisions.

At the University of Sheffield you will study computer science with AI specialisation over four years of full-time study, on a programme that extends the standard BSc to allow deeper specialisation in artificial intelligence. In your final year you will develop research and analytical skills through advanced taught modules and a group research project, giving you the opportunity to explore a focused area of AI in depth. A sandwich year and the opportunity for a year abroad extend the programme with professional and international experience, and work placement is integrated throughout.

The typical tariff of 168 reflects the mathematical and technical demands of a programme at one of the UK's leading computer science and AI research departments.

Graduates are exceptionally well placed in the current job market. AI and machine learning engineers, data scientists, research scientists, NLP specialists and AI product managers are among the most sought-after roles in the UK and globally. Graduates from this programme work in technology companies, financial services, healthcare, defence, media and research institutions.

Many go on to doctoral study in AI or machine learning, contributing to the research that is shaping the field. The Sheffield AI department has particular research strengths that inform the teaching, and the four-year structure with research project gives graduates a more substantial technical portfolio than many competing programmes.

Would do it again
Honestly, one of the best decisions I've made. The best part: the teaching staff are genuinely world-class and accessible. If I'm honest, would like to see more industry guest speakers in later years. On the city β€” local cost of living is m…

Honestly, one of the best decisions I've made. The best part: coursework pushes you to actually build real systems, not just write essays. If I'm honest, admin can be slow to respond, especially at start of term. On the city β€” the city is a…
