About this course

Computer science with a specialism in cyber security addresses one of the defining challenges of the digital age: protecting systems, networks and data from unauthorised access, disruption and attack. Cyber security draws on the full range of computer science, from systems architecture, networking and cryptography to software engineering and operating systems, and applies that knowledge to the practical and theoretical challenges of building and defending secure digital infrastructure. As organisations of all kinds depend increasingly on digital systems, the demand for professionals who understand both how those systems work and how they can be compromised has grown substantially.

At the University of Keele you will study for three years full-time, building a thorough grounding in computer science alongside specialist knowledge in cyber security. You will develop skills in programming, systems design, network security, ethical hacking, cryptography, security management and digital forensics, preparing you for the technical and analytical demands of professional security roles. The programme includes a sandwich year in professional practice and a year abroad, giving you extended industry experience and an international perspective on a field where threats and technologies evolve rapidly.

Your placement year gives you real-world exposure to security environments and the professional credibility that employers value.

Cyber security graduates work in information security management, penetration testing, security operations centres, digital forensics, risk and compliance, government security roles and the growing range of technology companies for whom security is a core product or service concern. Financial services, healthcare, defence, government, critical national infrastructure and large commercial organisations are all major employers. Many graduates also pursue professional certifications alongside or after their degree, and postgraduate study in cyber security, information security or digital forensics is a natural route for those who want to develop deeper technical expertise.
