About this course

Computer science with a specialisation in cyber security combines a rigorous technical education in computing with focused study of how digital systems can be attacked and how they can be defended. Computer science provides the foundational knowledge of algorithms, programming, networks, operating systems, and software engineering that underpins all serious technical work in cybersecurity. The cyber security strand develops specific skills in areas such as cryptography, penetration testing, network security, malware analysis, and digital forensics, giving you both the broad technical literacy of a computer scientist and the specialised knowledge of a security professional.

At the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne, you will study this three-year full-time degree with a sandwich year, a year abroad, and work placement opportunities. The sandwich and placement years give you extended professional experience in computing or security roles, while the year abroad provides international exposure in a field where threats and defences are inherently global.
