About this course

Computer science for games is a discipline that applies the rigour and methods of computer science to one of the most technically demanding and creatively ambitious sectors in the technology industry. Game development draws on real-time graphics, physics simulation, artificial intelligence, networking, audio engineering, and user interface design, all of which require serious programming and engineering expertise. The games industry is also at the forefront of adopting emerging technologies, from virtual reality and augmented reality to generative AI, making it a genuinely innovative environment in which to develop computing skills.

At Sheffield Hallam University, this three-year full-time degree brings together creative skills and emerging technologies to develop graduates who can create new ways of engaging audiences. You will work on real game development projects set by clients including AAA studios, independent developers, civic partners, and educational institutions, giving you direct experience of professional development contexts and briefs. The programme uses state-of-the-art facilities and industry-connected resources to develop your technical and creative abilities in parallel.

A foundation year is available for students who need to build their programming and mathematical preparation, and the programme also includes a sandwich year and supported work placements. The typical entry tariff is 104 UCAS points.

Graduates of computer science for games programmes work across the games industry and the broader interactive technology sector in roles including programmer, technical artist, tools developer, gameplay engineer, and systems engineer. The technical skills developed are also highly applicable in VR and AR development, film and television visual effects, simulation and training systems, and the growing field of interactive and immersive media. Many graduates also pursue postgraduate study in games technology, computer science, or creative computing.
