About this course

Software engineering is the disciplined, systematic approach to designing, building, testing, and maintaining software systems. It addresses not just the technical craft of writing code but the organisational and methodological challenges of producing reliable, scalable software in teams and across complex projects. As software has become embedded in every aspect of modern life, the demand for engineers who understand both the technical and the process dimensions of building it has grown enormously.

At Goldsmiths' College, this three-year full-time BSc Computer Science with a Software Engineering pathway gives you specialist preparation for a career in software design and development. The programme includes a sandwich placement year and a work placement, which means you will spend substantial time in a professional software environment before you graduate, applying what you have learned in a real commercial or research context. You will study algorithms and data structures, software design patterns, programming languages, testing and quality assurance, agile and project management methodologies, and the principles of system architecture.

Goldsmiths brings a distinctive creative and socially engaged perspective to computing, so the cultural and social contexts of software development are also part of the picture.

You will graduate with both the technical depth and the professional experience that employers in the software industry look for, as well as the ability to approach complex engineering problems methodically and to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams.

Career paths for software engineering graduates include roles as software developers, applications engineers, systems architects, DevOps engineers, and technical leads across a wide range of industries, from financial technology and healthcare to games, media, and the public sector. Many graduates move quickly into senior technical roles, while others pursue postgraduate study in advanced computing, artificial intelligence, or specialist areas of software engineering. The placement year typically accelerates the path to employment significantly.
