About this course

Computer science is the discipline that underpins all of modern computing, from the algorithms that power search engines and recommendation systems to the software engineering practices through which large and complex systems are built, tested, and maintained. It combines mathematical rigour with practical problem-solving, developing your ability to think abstractly about computational processes and to implement solutions in real programming languages and frameworks. As computing has become embedded in every aspect of economic and social life, computer science graduates are in demand across virtually every industry.

At the University of Gloucestershire, this three-year full-time programme gives you a solid foundation across the breadth of the discipline, from programming and algorithms through to databases, networks, software engineering, and the principles of system design. You will have the opportunity to undertake a placement between your second and third years, spending a year in industry gaining real professional experience that supplements and enriches your academic study. This placement is a significant advantage when you enter the graduate labour market, giving you direct evidence of your ability to work effectively in a professional computing environment.

You will develop strong programming skills across multiple languages, the ability to design and implement software systems of real complexity, and the analytical capabilities to evaluate and improve those systems. Collaborative project work is a feature of the programme, developing the teamwork and communication skills that professional software development requires.

Graduates go on to work as software developers, systems analysts, web developers, data analysts, IT consultants, and technical project managers across every sector of the economy.
