About this course

Computer science at the University of St Andrews is designed to ground you in both the theory and practice of the discipline, developing programming skills and the understanding of how computer systems are organised, designed, and implemented alongside the theoretical foundations that give that practice its intellectual depth. Computer science is a discipline that has grown from pure mathematics into an enormous applied field, and the most capable practitioners are those who understand both why algorithms work the way they do and how to implement them effectively in real systems.

This four-year full-time programme includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to study at a partner institution overseas and to encounter computer science in a different academic and cultural environment. You will study programming, algorithms, data structures, computer architecture, operating systems, software engineering, and the mathematical and logical foundations of computation, alongside more advanced topics as the degree progresses.
