About this course

Computer science is one of the foundational disciplines of the modern world, underpinning the hardware and software systems that drive almost every aspect of economic and social life. It combines the theoretical study of what is computable and how computation can be made efficient and reliable with the practical engineering of systems that meet real-world needs. At the University of Liverpool, this five-year programme with a year in industry covers the full breadth of computer science, from underlying principles and theory to the design and implementation of systems for a wide range of applications.

You will develop a comprehensive understanding of computer science, including hardware design, software development, algorithms, data structures, operating systems, networks and the management of information. The programme allows you to maintain breadth across the curriculum or to specialise in one of three pathways, artificial intelligence, algorithms and optimisation, or data science, depending on your interests and career goals. The year in industry gives you extended professional experience in a technology or IT context, building the practical credibility and professional connections that employers in the sector value, and preparing you for the realities of professional computing work in a way that purely academic programmes cannot.

Computer science graduates are among the most employable of all university graduates, with strong demand across virtually every sector that depends on digital systems. Software engineering, data science, artificial intelligence and machine learning, cybersecurity, cloud computing, product management and IT consultancy are the most common career directions. Technology companies, financial services, healthcare, government, defence and the creative industries all employ computer scientists in significant numbers.
