About this course

Computer science with artificial intelligence sits at the frontier of one of the most consequential technological shifts of our time. Computer science provides the foundational knowledge of algorithms, data structures, programming, software engineering, systems design and computational theory that underlies all software development. Artificial intelligence extends that foundation into one of its most rapidly developing applications: building systems that can learn from data, perceive and interpret the world, make decisions and generate outputs that previously required human intelligence.

The two together equip graduates to design and build the systems that are transforming work, medicine, transport and scientific discovery.

At the University of Southampton, this four-year degree places AI at the centre of a rigorous computer science education. You will study programming and software development, mathematics for computing, algorithms and data structures, machine learning, deep learning, computer vision, natural language processing and AI ethics alongside core systems topics. Southampton is one of the leading computer science departments in the UK with significant research activity in AI, and the programme is shaped by faculty who are active in the field.

You will undertake substantial project work, developing your ability to design, implement and evaluate complex systems rather than simply study them in the abstract.

AI is set to transform enormous areas of the economy and of everyday life, as Southampton's own description notes, and the technical knowledge this degree provides positions graduates to shape rather than merely respond to those changes.

Graduates go on to careers as software engineers, AI engineers, machine learning practitioners, data scientists, research engineers and technical leads across technology companies, financial services, healthcare, robotics, autonomous systems, gaming and many other sectors. The degree is also a strong foundation for doctoral research in AI or related fields, and for roles at the cutting edge of industry research and development.

Exceeded expectations
I've grown so much academically and personally here. The best part: coursework pushes you to actually build real systems, not just write essays. If I'm honest, would like to see more industry guest speakers in later years. On the city β€” loc…

Would do it again
Honestly, one of the best decisions I've made. The best part: the opportunity to do independent research in the final year is a highlight. If I'm honest, a few modules feel under-resourced compared to the flagship ones. On the city β€” the ci…
