About this course

Computer science with cyber security addresses two of the most consequential fields in contemporary technology, combining the foundational principles of computation with the specialist knowledge needed to protect digital systems, data and communications from attack and misuse. Computer science provides the underlying framework: algorithms, data structures, operating systems, networking, software engineering and the mathematical foundations of computing. Cyber security applies and extends that knowledge in the context of an adversarial landscape, where malicious actors constantly seek to exploit vulnerabilities in systems that are increasingly central to economic, social and political life.

At the University of Huddersfield, this three-year full-time programme includes a sandwich year with embedded work placement opportunities, giving you professional experience in a computing or cyber security environment before you complete your final year. Huddersfield has a practical, industry-oriented approach to computing education and strong connections to the digital economy of Yorkshire. The typical entry tariff is around 104 UCAS points.

You will study the core computer science curriculum including programming, data structures, algorithms, databases, networks and software engineering, alongside specialist modules in cyber security covering cryptography, network security, penetration testing, digital forensics, secure software development and the legal and ethical frameworks governing cyber security practice. Laboratory and project work are central to the programme, developing both the technical competence to build and analyse systems and the security mindset to identify and mitigate risks within them.

Graduates of computer science with cyber security programmes are in exceptionally high demand across virtually every sector of the economy. Roles in security operations, penetration testing and ethical hacking, security architecture, digital forensics, information security management, incident response and compliance are direct applications of the specialist knowledge developed in the programme. Software development roles in security-conscious organisations, including defence, financial services, healthcare and government, also recruit strongly from this background.

Many graduates pursue professional certifications such as CEH, CISSP or CompTIA Security alongside employment. Postgraduate study in cyber security, computer science or digital forensics is available for those seeking advanced technical or research expertise.
