About this course

Computer science is the intellectual and technical discipline that underlies modern computing, from the algorithms that power search engines and social media to the architectures of cloud systems and the theoretical limits of what machines can compute. It is at once a branch of applied mathematics, an engineering discipline, and a creative practice, and it is among the most employable degrees available. The skills it develops, including systematic thinking, problem decomposition, and the ability to build and reason about complex systems, are in demand across virtually every sector of the economy.

At Surrey this four-year full-time programme includes a foundation year for students who are new to computer science or whose prior qualifications require some additional preparation before entering the main degree. Whether you are already an experienced programmer or taking your first steps in the subject, the programme is designed to meet you at the right level and build from there. You will study algorithms, data structures, software engineering, computer architecture, programming languages, artificial intelligence, and systems programming, among other areas, developing the breadth and depth of knowledge that the discipline requires.

Surrey has integrated digital skills and AI literacy into its programmes, building the technological confidence and adaptability that employers value. The typical entry tariff is 136 UCAS points.

Career paths for computer science graduates are exceptionally broad. Software development, systems engineering, data science, cybersecurity, product management, artificial intelligence research, and technology consulting are among the most common routes. The four-year structure, including the foundation year, means graduates enter the job market with a full undergraduate education and the maturity that comes with it.

Many also pursue postgraduate study in computer science, artificial intelligence, or related fields.
