About this course

Computer science is the discipline at the heart of the digital world, encompassing the theory of computation, the engineering of software systems and the application of computing to problems across every domain of human activity. Software development, data management, system architecture, security and the design of user-facing applications all depend on the conceptual foundations and practical skills that a rigorous computer science education provides. As software becomes central to the functioning of healthcare, finance, logistics, government and culture, the demand for skilled computer scientists continues to grow.

At Brunel University London, this four-year full-time programme includes a foundation year, providing a supported entry route for students who want to build their mathematical and programming foundations before entering the main degree. The placement year gives you direct professional experience in a technology role, applying your academic learning in a real industry context and building the professional skills and connections that make graduates more competitive in the job market. You will develop the ability to specify, design, code, modify and test software solutions across a range of types, from web-based and mobile systems to enterprise applications, using appropriate commercial-grade development environments and database tools.

Computer science graduates are among the most employable in the graduate labour market. Roles include software developer, web developer, mobile applications developer, systems analyst, database administrator, quality assurance engineer and technical consultant. Graduates work across every sector, and many go on to specialise in areas such as artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, data science or cloud computing through postgraduate study or continuing professional development.

The placement year and the foundation year together make this a highly practical route through the subject, and Brunel's London location provides access to a large and varied technology industry.

Genuinely worthwhile
This is the perfect place to study this subject. The best part: the course strikes a good balance between theory and practical application. If I'm honest, first-year classes can be quite large. On the city β€” good transport links make it eas…

I was sceptical before starting β€” now I'd recommend it to anyone. The best part: the opportunity to do independent research in the final year is a highlight. If I'm honest, the timetable has some awkward 9am / Friday afternoon slots. On the…
