About this course

Computer systems engineering sits at the junction of hardware and software, concerned with the design, construction, and integration of the computing systems that underpin almost every aspect of modern life. Where computer science focuses primarily on algorithms and software, and electronic engineering on circuits and components, computer systems engineering brings them together, dealing with the full stack from embedded microcontrollers and digital circuits through to operating systems, network protocols, and the software that makes systems behave as intended. It is the discipline behind the processors in your phone, the control systems in vehicles, the infrastructure of the internet, and the safety-critical systems in aircraft, medical devices, and industrial plant.

At Brunel University London, this BEng programme includes a foundation year, which provides a solid grounding in the mathematical and scientific principles that underpin engineering study. The foundation year is designed for students who have the ability and motivation to succeed in engineering but who benefit from additional academic preparation before entering the main degree. From the foundation year onward, you will study digital logic, computer architecture, embedded systems, software engineering, communications, and system design, developing both the theoretical understanding and the practical skills that industry values.

Computer systems engineering graduates are in demand across a wide range of sectors. Roles in embedded software development, hardware design, systems integration, network engineering, cybersecurity, and the development of connected devices and IoT systems are all accessible. Employers include technology companies, defence contractors, automotive and aerospace manufacturers, telecoms companies, and the public sector.

Many graduates pursue postgraduate study in computer engineering, cybersecurity, robotics, or AI, and the combination of hardware and software competence the degree provides is increasingly valuable in a world where the two cannot be neatly separated.

I've grown so much academically and personally here. The best part: the lecturers include people actively shipping research to industry. If I'm honest, some seminar groups were too big for meaningful discussion. On the city β€” the city is a …
