About this course

Computer systems engineering is the discipline concerned with the design, development and optimisation of the hardware, software and embedded systems that underlie modern digital technology. From microprocessors and network infrastructure to operating systems and real-time embedded controllers, computer systems engineers work at the level where hardware and software meet, developing the deep technical understanding of both that is needed to build reliable, efficient and secure digital systems. At Middlesex University this programme, which includes a foundation element and a sandwich year, develops that capability from the ground up.

You will study the fundamentals of computer architecture, digital electronics, programming, operating systems, networks and embedded systems, developing both theoretical understanding and practical design and implementation skills. The foundation element provides a structured entry point for those who benefit from additional preparation before the main degree begins, building the mathematical and technical foundations that the programme requires. The sandwich year gives you a substantial period of professional experience in a technical engineering role, and work placements are also built in throughout the programme.

This combination of academic training and industry exposure means you graduate with both the technical depth and the professional experience that employers look for.

Graduates of computer systems engineering work across the technology industry in roles including embedded systems engineering, hardware design, systems architecture, network engineering, firmware development and technical product management. Industries including consumer electronics, automotive systems, telecommunications, aerospace, defence and the internet of things are among the employers who recruit in this field. Chartered engineer status through relevant professional bodies is a common long-term aspiration.

Some graduates go on to postgraduate study in computer engineering, embedded systems, cybersecurity or computer science, deepening their technical expertise or broadening their capability into adjacent areas.
