About this course

Computer systems engineering is the discipline concerned with how computers and digital electronic systems are designed, built and made to work together effectively. It sits at the boundary between computer science and electronic engineering, addressing not just software and algorithms but the hardware architecture, electronic components, embedded systems and digital circuits that physical computing systems depend on. As computing has become embedded in everything from consumer electronics and medical devices to industrial control systems and vehicles, the demand for engineers who understand systems at this level has grown considerably.

At the University of Essex, this three-year full-time programme builds a strong foundation in core computer science theory alongside a thorough understanding of the architecture and components of digital computers, electronic systems and embedded systems. You will study digital electronics, computer architecture, programming, operating systems, networks, signal processing and embedded system design, developing both the theoretical understanding and the practical engineering skills needed to design and build real systems. Essex's investment in computing and electronics teaching facilities supports hands-on work throughout the degree.

Graduates of computer systems engineering programmes find employment across a wide range of sectors, including telecommunications, defence, consumer electronics, automotive engineering, aerospace, healthcare technology, robotics and software development. Roles include embedded systems engineer, hardware engineer, systems architect, firmware developer, software engineer and technical consultant. The combination of electronic and software understanding makes graduates versatile across the spectrum from purely hardware to purely software roles.

Many graduates work towards professional engineering accreditation with the Institution of Engineering and Technology. Further study at master's level in computer systems, embedded systems, communications engineering or computer science is an option for those who want to specialise or pursue research.
