About this course

Computer systems engineering sits at the boundary between software and hardware, concerned with designing systems in which the two work together effectively. Where computer science focuses primarily on algorithms and software, and electronic engineering focuses on circuits and devices, computer systems engineering addresses the integration of both: how processors are designed and programmed, how embedded systems are built for specific applications, how networks carry data reliably and how complex systems are controlled and coordinated. The discipline is central to robotics, the Internet of Things, autonomous vehicles, industrial automation and a wide range of defence and aerospace applications.

At the University of Sheffield, the four-year full-time MEng programme provides rigorous training in the core fields of computer systems: mathematics, control theory, embedded systems and programming, before building towards advanced modules in robotics, AI integration, communication systems and systems engineering. You will develop both hardware and software skills, and the degree includes individual and group research projects in the later years, developing the ability to tackle open-ended technical challenges at a professional level. The degree includes a sandwich year, a year abroad and a work placement, giving you substantial professional experience and international exposure before graduation.

Sheffield's strong engineering department and its connections with the advanced manufacturing and aerospace industries in the Yorkshire and Humber region enrich the career development opportunities available to students.

Graduates work in robotics, embedded systems, telecommunications, aerospace, defence, the Internet of Things, industrial automation and AI hardware development. Many pursue chartered engineer status through professional bodies. Postgraduate study in computer systems, embedded systems, robotics or AI hardware is a natural continuation for those who want to specialise in research or advanced design.

Genuinely worthwhile
I was sceptical before starting β€” now I'd recommend it to anyone. The best part: coursework pushes you to actually build real systems, not just write essays. If I'm honest, some seminar groups were too big for meaningful discussion. On the …

A great decision
The programme genuinely lives up to its reputation. The best part: small-group tutorials really push your thinking. If I'm honest, the timetable has some awkward 9am / Friday afternoon slots. On the city β€” good transport links make it easy …
