About this course

Computer systems engineering focuses on the design, development, and integration of the hardware and software components that make modern computing systems work. It sits at the boundary between computer science and electronic engineering, addressing questions about how processors are designed, how hardware and software communicate, how embedded systems are built for specific applications, and how computer systems are engineered to be reliable, efficient, and secure. As computing becomes ever more deeply embedded in vehicles, medical devices, industrial systems, and everyday infrastructure, the engineers who understand these systems at both hardware and software level are increasingly important.

At Brunel you will develop knowledge and skills across digital electronics, computer architecture, programming, embedded systems, networks, and software development. The programme equips you to design and build computer systems at a level of depth that requires understanding both the hardware and the software dimensions. The degree includes a foundation year, which provides academic preparation for students whose prior qualifications need to be developed before the main BEng programme begins, and the four-year structure includes a placement year, giving you substantial professional experience in a relevant engineering environment before you graduate.
