Construction Management

Construction management is the discipline concerned with planning, organising, and delivering construction projects on time, within budget, and to the required quality. It sits at the intersection of the built environment professions, drawing on engineering, surveying, project management, contract law, and financial management to oversee the complex processes through which buildings, infrastructure, and civil engineering works are brought from design to completion. Construction is one of the largest industries in the economy, and its managers play a critical role in determining whether projects succeed or fail.

At Glasgow Caledonian University, this four-year full-time programme is taught using both traditional and online methods and covers a wide variety of technical, financial, and planning aspects in both theory and practice. GCU has an exceptional record in this field, with most construction management graduates in Scotland having trained at the university. A sandwich year is embedded in the programme, giving you direct professional experience in a construction or project management role before your final year.

A year abroad is also incorporated, and work placement is additionally available, ensuring that you graduate with substantial practical experience alongside your academic training.

You will study project planning and scheduling, cost management, contract law, structural technology, health and safety, environmental management, and the financial aspects of construction procurement and delivery. The ability to manage multiple workstreams and communicate clearly with clients, contractors, and design teams is developed throughout.

Graduates go on to careers as construction managers, project managers, site managers, quantity surveyors, and commercial managers in contracting companies, consultancies, developers, and public sector bodies. Professional development through the Chartered Institute of Building and related bodies is the standard route to full professional status. Postgraduate study in construction management, project management, or quantity surveying is also an option.
