Contemporary Craft and Music
Contemporary craft and music might seem an unexpected pairing, but both are disciplines defined by the relationship between the hand and the mind, between skill and expression, between making and meaning. Craft in its contemporary sense encompasses ceramics, textiles, jewellery, bookbinding, and a wide range of material practices that have been reinvigorated in recent years by designers and makers who bring fine art thinking to functional and decorative objects. Music combines the study of performance, composition, history, and the sonic culture we all inhabit.
Together, these subjects develop creative, technical, and critical abilities that are rare in combination.
At Liverpool Hope you will develop hands-on design and making skills in the craft strand, working with materials and processes that develop both technical mastery and creative confidence. The craft programme builds a supportive community of emerging makers, encouraging experimentation, innovative project development, and engagement with the contemporary craft world. Music study will develop your understanding of musical history and theory, your performance abilities, and your engagement with the wide range of musical traditions and practices that make up contemporary musical life.
The three-year full-time programme includes a sandwich placement year and a year abroad, giving you direct experience of professional creative environments and the chance to engage with international craft and music contexts.
Graduates pursue a wide range of creative careers, including studio practice as independent makers, arts education and workshop facilitation, museum and gallery work, music industry roles, community arts, and roles in design and manufacturing. The discipline and technical skill developed in craft, combined with the cultural breadth of music study, produces graduates who are adaptable, creative, and equipped for varied professional paths. Many students continue to postgraduate study in applied arts, music, or arts education.
