Costume Production

Costume production is the craft of bringing characters and worlds to life through clothing: interpreting a designer's vision, working with period and contemporary cuts, selecting and manipulating fabrics, and constructing garments that must look right on stage, screen or in live performance even under harsh lighting and sustained physical use. At Arts University Plymouth, this three-year full-time degree gives you a hands-on grounding in the full range of costume making skills, from pattern cutting and tailoring to specialist techniques in millinery, corsetry, distressing and textile manipulation. You will work from classic and contemporary scripts, musical theatre, opera, film and live-action event contexts, learning to read a brief and translate it into physical garments under the pressures and constraints that professional productions impose. The programme includes a sandwich year and work placement opportunities, which are central to your development: spending time embedded in a professional costume department, whether in theatre, television, film or events, gives you a realistic experience of production workflows and the professional relationships that sustain a career in this field.

Graduates move into roles as costume makers, wardrobe supervisors, costume stand-bys on film and television sets, tailors and specialist constructors in costume houses and production companies. Some go on to work in costume management for touring productions, opera companies, national theatres or in the film and streaming sector, which employs large costume teams on major productions. Others develop portfolio careers combining production work with teaching or with specialist areas such as historical reconstruction, armour and prosthetics, or ceremonial costume.
