Counselling Skills and Psychology

Counselling skills and psychology together provide a combination that is both theoretically rich and practically oriented. Psychology offers a scientific framework for understanding human thought, emotion, behaviour, and mental health, drawing on research traditions in cognitive, social, developmental, and clinical psychology. Counselling skills, alongside this, provide grounded training in the interpersonal competencies, ethical awareness, and reflective practice that characterise effective work in helping relationships.

At the University of Chester, this three-year full-time programme gives you a thorough grounding in psychological theory and research alongside structured development of counselling skills and the capacity for self-reflective practice that professional helping work demands. You will study psychological approaches to mental health, personality, development, and social behaviour, and examine how different theoretical frameworks in counselling, including person-centred, psychodynamic, and cognitive-behavioural approaches, inform therapeutic practice. A year abroad is incorporated into the programme, providing an opportunity to study in a different country and develop your understanding of how cultural and social contexts shape approaches to mental health and wellbeing.

Graduates from this combined programme are well placed for roles in counselling support, mental health services, education, social work, and community organisations. Some go on to train as counsellors, psychotherapists, or clinical psychologists through further professional study, for which this combination provides excellent preparation. Others move into related roles in human resources, coaching, healthcare administration, or the voluntary sector, where skills in communication, empathy, and psychological understanding are highly valued.
