Counselling

Counselling is the professional practice of supporting people through emotional and psychological difficulties, using specific relational skills, theoretical frameworks, and ethical principles to help clients explore their experiences, make sense of their feelings, and work towards greater wellbeing and autonomy. It is a discipline rooted in respect for the individual and a belief in the capacity for change and growth, drawing on traditions including person-centred therapy, cognitive approaches, psychodynamic theory, and integrative practice. Effective counsellors need to develop both the practical skills of the therapeutic relationship and a deep understanding of the theoretical frameworks that guide their work.

At the University of Sunderland this two-year full-time programme provides a focused and intensive preparation for counselling practice. You will study within a supportive and inclusive environment, developing core counselling skills, building your understanding of how people develop and change, and engaging with the ethical and professional framework within which counsellors operate. The programme develops transferable skills in communication, reflection, and interpersonal understanding that are valuable across many professional contexts, and you will complete a final project shaped by your own developing interests within the field.

Graduates from counselling programmes work in a wide range of settings, including primary care, mental health services, charities, schools, universities, occupational health, voluntary sector organisations, and private practice. The two-year qualification provides a foundation for professional counselling practice, and many graduates go on to further study or supervised practice to work towards full professional accreditation with organisations such as the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy. The skills and knowledge developed in the programme also support careers in social work, nursing, education, human resources, and other roles where understanding and working with people's emotional experiences is central to the work.
