Criminology

Criminology is the systematic study of crime, its causes, its consequences, and society's responses to it. Rather than simply describing what criminals do, the discipline asks deeper questions: what makes certain acts crimes in the first place, how do social structures and inequalities shape patterns of offending and victimisation, and how well do criminal justice systems actually work to prevent harm and deliver justice? These are questions with real implications for policy, communities, and individuals.

At the University of Huddersfield, this three-year full-time programme provides a thorough grounding in criminological theory and research. You will examine the major theoretical traditions in the field, from classical approaches to contemporary critical perspectives, and apply them to a range of crime types including violent crime, white-collar offending, organised crime, and cybercrime. You will also study the institutions of the criminal justice system, including policing, courts, and prisons, considering their effectiveness and the debates surrounding their reform.

Research methods form an important part of the curriculum, equipping you to evaluate evidence critically and to conduct your own investigations into crime and justice. A typical entry tariff of 104 points gives an indication of the academic level expected.

The programme develops skills in analysis, critical thinking, written communication, and the ability to engage with complex social data.
