Criminology
Criminology is the social-scientific study of crime, the individuals and systems that define it, and the institutions that respond to it. Rather than treating crime as a simple fact, criminology asks who decides what counts as criminal, how the police, courts, and prisons operate in practice, whether the outcomes of the justice system are fair, and what the evidence shows about effective approaches to reducing harm. It draws on sociology, psychology, law, philosophy, and history to produce a discipline that is both intellectually rigorous and directly relevant to contemporary social policy and public debate.
At the University of Northampton, this part-time Criminology programme offers flexibility for those who need to fit study around work or other responsibilities while pursuing a serious degree-level engagement with the subject. You will explore the major theoretical traditions in criminology, from classical deterrence and positivist explanations of offending behaviour to critical, feminist, and cultural perspectives that challenge the assumptions on which conventional criminal justice rests. You will examine specific forms of crime, including violent crime, white-collar and corporate offending, cybercrime, and hate crime, alongside the institutions that respond to them.
