Criminology with Law

Criminology with Law is a degree that brings together the critical social science of crime and the systematic study of legal rules and institutions. Criminology examines what behaviour is defined as criminal, who defines it and why, what causes crime and deviant behaviour, and how the criminal justice system responds to offending and offenders. Law, meanwhile, examines the rules and principles that organise society, the processes through which they are developed and applied, and the institutions of the courts, police and legal profession through which they operate.

The combination is particularly valuable because criminal justice sits at the precise intersection of these two disciplines.

At Teesside University, this part-time programme develops your analytical skills, knowledge and understanding of both criminological and sociological frameworks alongside core legal principles and methods. You will develop personal and transferable skills across the programme, including critical thinking, evidence evaluation, information retrieval, written and oral presentation, teamwork and digital literacy. These skills underpin professional practice across the criminal justice system, social services, research and the voluntary sector, as well as providing a strong foundation for legal training and academic study.

Criminology with Law graduates go on to careers in the criminal justice system, including probation, the courts service, police services, prison work, youth offending teams and victim support, as well as in social work, community development, policy research and the voluntary sector. The law component of the degree opens additional routes into legal practice through the Solicitors Qualifying Examination or the Bar, and many graduates go on to further professional qualifications in law, social work or criminology. Postgraduate study in criminology, law, criminal justice or social policy is a natural continuation for those who wish to specialise.
