About this course

Cyber security and digital forensics addresses two interrelated dimensions of the challenge of managing risk in a digitally dependent world. Cyber security is concerned with protecting information systems from attack, unauthorised access, and disruption: understanding how vulnerabilities arise, how attackers exploit them, and how organisations can defend themselves more effectively. Digital forensics addresses what happens after an incident: how digital evidence is collected, preserved, and analysed in ways that are legally admissible and technically rigorous.

Together the two disciplines address the full lifecycle of a security event, from prevention through response to investigation.

At Middlesex University in London, this programme includes a foundation year, a sandwich year in industry, and work placement opportunities, providing structured support and professional experience across the full course. The foundation year is particularly valuable for students who are entering from non-traditional routes or who want to build their technical and academic confidence before the main degree. The sandwich year gives you the opportunity to work within a real organisation in a security or forensics context, developing the practical skills and professional judgment that theoretical study alone cannot provide.

Throughout the programme, you will study cybercrime prevention, digital investigation techniques, network security, malware analysis, cryptography, and the legal and ethical frameworks governing digital investigations. You will gain practical experience using industry-standard tools in a controlled environment.

This is a part-time programme, making it accessible to students who are balancing their studies with work, including those who may already be working in technology or security roles and are looking to formalise and deepen their expertise.

Graduates work as security analysts, penetration testers, digital forensics investigators, incident responders, and in a range of roles across government, defence, financial services, technology companies, and law enforcement.
