About this course

Cyber security has become one of the most critical disciplines in the digital economy. Every organisation that stores data, operates online systems, or depends on networked infrastructure faces the challenge of protecting those assets against an evolving landscape of threats. Cyber security professionals understand how attacks are constructed and executed, how systems can be hardened against them, how incidents are detected and responded to, and how organisations build the policies, processes, and cultures needed to manage risk over time.

The discipline draws on computer science, networking, cryptography, law, and human behaviour, making it both technically deep and broadly applied.

At University College Birmingham you will study this three-year full-time programme, which includes a sandwich year and a work placement. The placement gives you the opportunity to gain real experience in a professional cyber security environment, applying what you have learned in an operational context and building the networks and evidence of competence that employers value highly. Across the programme you will study network security, ethical hacking and penetration testing, digital forensics, cryptography, risk and compliance, and incident response.

You will also examine the legal and regulatory frameworks that govern data protection and cyber crime. Practical, hands-on learning is central to the curriculum, giving you experience of real tools and scenarios rather than just theoretical knowledge. The typical entry tariff is 104 points.

Cyber security graduates are in high demand, with significant skills shortages across public and private sectors. Career paths include penetration tester, security analyst, incident responder, security operations centre (SOC) analyst, digital forensics investigator, information security manager, and cyber risk consultant. Financial services, defence, government, healthcare, retail, and technology companies all employ large numbers of cyber security professionals.

The sandwich year placement often leads directly to graduate offers. Further study at postgraduate level, and professional certifications, are common routes for those seeking to specialise or progress to senior technical or management roles.
