Cymraeg, y Gymraeg, yw un o ieithoedd hynaf Ewrop ac mae ganddi draddodiad llenyddol cyfoethog sy'n ymestyn dros bymtheg can mlynedd. Mae'r ieithoedd Celtaidd, gan gynnwys yr Wyddeleg, Gaeleg yr Alban, Cernyweg, Llydaweg a Manaweg, yn ffurfio teulu ieithyddol unigryw a hanesyddol bwysig sy'n cysylltu cymunedau ar draws Prydain, Iwerddon a'r cyfandir Ewropeaidd. Welsh is among the oldest living languages in Europe, with a literary tradition stretching back fifteen centuries, and the Celtic languages as a group represent a unique and historically significant family that connects communities across Britain, Ireland, and the European continent. Studying Welsh and the Celtic languages at degree level means engaging deeply with Welsh as a living language while also exploring the broader cultural, historical, and comparative context that gives it meaning.
At Prifysgol Aberystwyth, this three-year, full-time programme is offered in one of the heartlands of Welsh-language life and culture, and the university has a long and distinguished history in Welsh-medium education and Celtic scholarship. You will develop advanced proficiency in Welsh, working on the language at both formal and informal registers, alongside comparative study of the other Celtic languages and their literatures. The programme explores Welsh-language literature from medieval poetry to contemporary prose and poetry, and situates that literature within its social, political, and cultural history.
You will develop skills in linguistic analysis, close reading, historical understanding, and critical argument.
Graduates from this programme are well placed for careers in Welsh-medium education, broadcasting, translation, publishing, the civil service in Wales, heritage and culture organisations, and the Welsh-language media sector. The Welsh Government's active support for the language means that Welsh-language skills are genuinely valued in many professional contexts. Further study at postgraduate level in Welsh, Celtic studies, or linguistics is also a natural route for graduates who wish to specialise further, including in research and academic careers.
