Czech and Finnish

Czech and Finnish is one of the most linguistically distinctive combinations available at undergraduate level, bringing together two of Europe's most structurally complex languages from very different families. Czech, a West Slavic language, is the language of Bohemia and Moravia, with a rich literary tradition stretching from medieval manuscript culture through the national revival of the nineteenth century to the internationally acclaimed writing of the twentieth, including Kafka, Hasek, and the extraordinary novelists and playwrights of the post-war decades. Finnish, a Finno-Ugric language with no relationship to the Indo-European family, is a language of remarkable grammatical complexity and a literary culture that runs from the Kalevala, the national epic compiled in the nineteenth century from oral folk tradition, to the modernist and contemporary writers who have shaped Finnish literature since.

At University College London, this four-year full-time programme develops proficiency in both languages alongside engagement with the literary, cultural, and historical contexts that produced them. UCL's School of Slavonic and East European Studies has one of the strongest reputations in the world for the study of East European and Nordic languages and cultures, providing an excellent research environment for this unusual and intellectually demanding combination. A typical entry tariff of 168 points reflects the rigour and specialisation of the degree.

Graduates of Czech and Finnish programmes are exceptionally well placed for careers in Central European and Nordic affairs, whether in diplomacy, international organisations, journalism, translation, academic research, or business with a Czech or Finnish dimension. The rarity of the combination is itself a professional asset in a market where most graduates cannot read or speak either language. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in Slavonic studies, Scandinavian studies, or a related area.
