Czech and French

Czech and French is a distinctive language combination that connects two significant but very different European traditions. Czech is a West Slavic language spoken in the Czech Republic, a country with a rich cultural, literary, and intellectual heritage that spans the mediaeval city of Prague, the Bohemian Baroque, and the significant literary tradition of figures such as Kafka, Hasek, and Kundera. French is one of the world's major languages, spoken across Europe, Africa, the Caribbean, and beyond, carrying a literary and philosophical tradition of global significance and serving as an official language of numerous international organisations.

At University College London, this four-year BA programme splits the degree equally between the two languages. You will take modules covering language skills, speaking, listening, reading, writing, and translation, in both Czech and French, alongside cultural topics including literature, history, film, linguistics, and politics relevant to each language and the societies in which they are spoken. UCL's modern languages provision is among the strongest in the UK, and the breadth of modules available allows you to tailor your study to your particular interests.

The third year is spent abroad, split between countries where your two languages are spoken, providing sustained immersion in both linguistic and cultural environments.

You will develop advanced language skills in both Czech and French, intercultural competence, analytical and research skills, and the ability to communicate and work effectively across linguistic and cultural difference.

Graduates from Czech and French programmes pursue careers in translation and interpreting, the foreign service, international organisations, journalism, business, academia, and the cultural sector. The relative rarity of Czech language skills alongside French makes this combination particularly distinctive. Postgraduate study in languages, translation, Central European studies, or a related discipline is a natural continuation.
