Dance

Dance as an academic and practical discipline is far more than performance. It is a form of embodied knowledge, a way of investigating how human beings move, communicate, and create meaning through their bodies. At degree level, dance brings together choreographic practice, performance, movement research, and critical theory, asking students to develop both their physical craft and their intellectual understanding of dance as an art form with its own history, techniques, and cultural significance.

At the University of Salford, this three-year full-time programme places choreography at the centre of your studies. You will develop your creative skills in both group and solo choreography, working with industry professionals in intensive projects that simulate professional company processes from initial concept through to public performance. You will perform in the New Adelphi Theatre, experiencing the discipline of preparing and presenting work to an audience, and you will take part in dance festivals both on campus and at other venues.

Specialist workshops will keep you in contact with current industry trends and the diverse professional landscape that dance occupies today, from contemporary performance and community dance to commercial work and interdisciplinary practice. You will also engage with the theoretical and historical contexts of dance, developing the critical vocabulary to analyse and discuss choreographic work.

You will build skills in collaboration, physical artistry, creative process, and professional presentation alongside the academic capacities for research and critical reflection that a degree demands.

Graduates pursue careers in performance, choreography, dance teaching, community dance leadership, arts administration, dance therapy, and arts education. Many go on to work in schools, community organisations, arts companies, and cultural institutions. Others continue to postgraduate study in dance, choreography, or arts practice, or develop portfolio careers that combine performance with teaching and creative production.
