Danish and Polish

Danish and Polish represent two distinct but equally fascinating European linguistic traditions, each connecting you to cultures that are often underrepresented in language curricula but that offer genuinely rich literary, historical, and contemporary engagement. Danish opens access to the Scandinavian world, with its celebrated design culture, social democratic heritage, and a literature that has shaped European modernism. Polish connects you to one of Central Europe's most significant and resilient cultures, a country with a complex and at times painful history that has produced a literary tradition of extraordinary depth, from Romantic poetry to contemporary Nobel laureates.

At University College London, this four-year BA in Danish and Polish is taught at SSEES and is a joint honours programme split equally between the two languages. You will take modules in language skills, including speaking, listening, reading, writing, and translation, alongside cultural topics covering literature, history, film, linguistics, and politics in both the Danish and Polish contexts. A wide variety of modules allows you to tailor the degree around your interests.

A year abroad, split between countries where each language is spoken, provides the immersive experience essential for genuine linguistic fluency.

Graduates from Danish and Polish programmes are well placed for careers in diplomacy, international business, translation and interpretation, journalism, the cultural sector, and roles in organisations focused on Scandinavia or Central and Eastern Europe.
