Danish and Romanian

Danish and Romanian are two European languages that occupy quite different places in the linguistic landscape. Danish is a North Germanic language spoken primarily in Denmark and with deep historical ties to the other Scandinavian tongues, carrying a literary tradition that includes figures such as Hans Christian Andersen and Søren Kierkegaard. Romanian is a Romance language, the easternmost of the Latin-derived languages spoken across Europe, and it offers a window into a culture shaped by ancient Dacian roots, Roman conquest, Byzantine influence, Ottoman proximity, and twentieth-century political history.

Studying both side by side is unusual and intellectually ambitious, and it reflects the kind of comparative perspective that a degree at University College London makes possible.

Over four years of full-time study, you will develop advanced competence in both languages, moving from foundational grammar and vocabulary to sophisticated reading, writing, and spoken communication. Alongside language classes you will engage with literature, culture, history, and contemporary society in Danish and Romanian-speaking contexts. You will learn to analyse texts critically, translate with precision, and think across linguistic and cultural boundaries in ways that monolingual study cannot develop.
