About this course

Data science and artificial intelligence is a degree for the present moment, addressing two of the most significant and rapidly developing fields in contemporary technology. Data science provides the mathematical and statistical foundation for extracting knowledge from large and complex datasets. Artificial intelligence adds the techniques of machine learning, deep learning, natural language processing, and intelligent systems design, enabling computers to perform tasks that previously required human intelligence.

Together they represent the core of a technological transformation that is reshaping industries, professions, and everyday life.

At the University of Stirling this four-year programme includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to study in another country and to encounter different approaches to both the technical and the ethical dimensions of data science and AI. You will develop skills in programming, statistical modelling, machine learning, data engineering, and the design and evaluation of AI systems, alongside an engagement with the social and ethical implications of intelligent systems operating in the world. Stirling's emphasis on rigour and critical thinking means that the course prepares you not just to use tools but to understand what they are doing and to ask whether what they are doing is sound and responsible.

Data science and AI graduates are in exceptional demand across every sector. Roles include data scientist, machine learning engineer, AI research scientist, data engineer, analytics consultant, and product manager for AI-driven products. Technology companies, financial institutions, healthcare providers, government agencies, and research organisations all employ people with this combination of skills.

The year abroad adds an international dimension that is increasingly valued by employers with global operations. Further study at postgraduate level in machine learning, artificial intelligence, statistics, or a specific application domain is available for those who wish to develop deep specialism or pursue a research career.

Exceeded expectations
I've grown so much academically and personally here. The best part: the course strikes a good balance between theory and practical application. If I'm honest, admin can be slow to respond, especially at start of term. On the city β€” good tra…

Genuinely worthwhile
This is the perfect place to study this subject. The best part: coursework pushes you to actually build real systems, not just write essays. If I'm honest, the timetable has some awkward 9am / Friday afternoon slots. On the city β€” the city …
