Here's the honest picture on this course - what you'd study, whether you'd likely get in, what it pays, and where it leads. Everything's real data.
About this course

Data science has transformed how organisations make decisions, turning vast quantities of raw information into insight, prediction, and action. It draws on statistics, mathematics, and computer science, but its real power lies in applying these tools to real-world problems: understanding customer behaviour, detecting fraud, improving healthcare outcomes, or modelling climate systems. This three-year full-time programme at the University of Brighton includes both a sandwich year and a work placement, meaning you will spend significant time working in industry before you graduate.

You will study the mathematical and statistical foundations of data analysis, including probability, linear algebra, and inferential methods, alongside the programming and computational skills needed to work with large datasets. Python, SQL, and machine learning tools are central to the practical curriculum, and you will learn to build, evaluate, and communicate models effectively. The sandwich year places you in a professional data environment, where you will tackle real problems, work alongside experienced practitioners, and build the kind of portfolio that makes graduates immediately employable.

You will also develop skills in data visualisation and the ability to explain technical findings clearly to non-specialist audiences, which is increasingly important as data roles expand beyond technology departments into every sector of the economy.

Data science graduates are in very high demand across finance, healthcare, retail, logistics, government, media, and technology. Roles include data analyst, data scientist, machine learning engineer, business intelligence analyst, and quantitative researcher. Many graduates move quickly into senior positions as their combination of technical skill and practical experience is relatively rare.

For those who want to go further, postgraduate study in data science, statistics, artificial intelligence, or domain-specific applications is a natural next step.

A great decision
Honestly, one of the best decisions I've made. The best part: the career fair connections with top tech employers are genuinely valuable. If I'm honest, admin can be slow to respond, especially at start of term. On the city β€” the city is a …

Worth it overall
Overall a solid programme but worth going in with open eyes. The best part: the cohort are bright and motivated, which makes the learning environment great. If I'm honest, the timetable has some awkward 9am / Friday afternoon slots. On the …
