About this course

Data science is the discipline at the heart of the information economy. Society is built on data, and the ability to collect, process, analyse, and extract meaning from large and complex datasets is one of the defining professional skills of the twenty-first century. Data science combines programming, statistical reasoning, machine learning, and domain knowledge to address real-world problems across every sector of the economy, from healthcare and finance to retail, government, and scientific research.

It is a field that requires both technical competence and the intellectual flexibility to apply quantitative tools to problems that arise in very different contexts.

At the University of Sussex, this four-year full-time programme includes an integrated industrial placement year and a foundation year, making it accessible to students who need to build their mathematical and computational foundations while also giving you a substantial period of professional experience before you graduate. You will develop proficiency in handling data, using computational and statistical methods to solve real-world data-intensive problems, and you will build skills in programming, data visualisation, statistical modelling, and the ethical and practical dimensions of working with data at scale.
