About this course

Data science is one of the most rapidly growing and consequential disciplines in the modern economy. It combines statistical theory, mathematical modelling, computational methods and domain knowledge to extract insight from the vast quantities of data that organisations now generate and collect. A skilled data scientist can identify patterns, build predictive models, inform decisions and create value from data that would otherwise remain inert, and this capability is in demand across virtually every sector, from healthcare and finance to retail, government, research and the technology industry.

At Aberystwyth University, this four-year full-time programme, which includes an integrated year in industry, combines mathematical, statistical and computational approaches in a way that develops the full range of skills a professional data scientist needs. You will study statistics, probability, machine learning, data visualisation, database systems, programming, and the computational tools used in modern data analysis, alongside the mathematical foundations that underpin rigorous quantitative reasoning. The integrated year in industry is central to the degree's value: it gives you a full year of professional experience working in a data science role in a real organisation, which is one of the most effective ways to develop the professional skills, judgment and network that an early-career data scientist needs.
