About this course

Design engineering is a discipline that bridges the gap between engineering and design, combining the analytical rigour, technical knowledge, and problem-solving methods of engineering with the human-centred thinking, creative process, and visual communication skills of design. The result is a form of practice that can engage with the full complexity of real-world challenges, from the behaviour of materials and systems to the needs and experiences of the people who will use the things being made.

At Imperial College London this professionally accredited four-year, full-time MEng programme draws on one of the world's leading engineering and science environments to prepare you to turn creativity into real-world solutions. You will develop both traditional engineering foundations and modern design tools and mindsets, learning to work across the full product development cycle from research and concept generation through to prototyping, testing, and refinement. Imperial's research infrastructure, industry connections, and the technical expertise of its staff give the programme extraordinary depth, and the design dimension ensures that engineering knowledge is always connected to the human and environmental contexts in which solutions must work.

Graduates of design engineering from Imperial go on to careers across a wide range of industries and contexts. Many enter engineering design roles in product development, manufacturing, consumer electronics, medical technology, automotive, aerospace, and sustainable technology. Others move into consultancy, innovation strategy, venture capital, or entrepreneurship, using the combination of engineering competence and design thinking to develop new products and businesses.

The MEng qualification supports progression towards chartered engineer status. Imperial's alumni network and reputation open doors across the technology and innovation economy both in the UK and internationally.

I was sceptical before starting β€” now I'd recommend it to anyone. The best part: the opportunity to do independent research in the final year is a highlight. If I'm honest, some seminar groups were too big for meaningful discussion. On the …
