About this course

Design engineering is a discipline that refuses to separate creativity from technical rigour. Where engineering alone might focus on what works, and design alone on what is desirable, design engineering insists on both simultaneously: products and systems that function reliably, perform efficiently, and meet the needs of the people who use them in ways that are genuinely well considered. The field applies design thinking, human factors, materials knowledge, manufacturing processes, and engineering analysis to a wide range of challenges, from consumer products to industrial equipment and from assistive technologies to sustainable energy systems.

At the University of Brighton, this four-year, full-time programme includes a sandwich placement year and work placement experience, giving it a strong practical orientation alongside the academic and design content. You will develop your abilities across the full design engineering process: understanding user needs, generating and testing concepts, performing engineering analysis, selecting materials and processes, and realising designs through prototyping and manufacturing. Digital design tools, including CAD and simulation software, are central to the curriculum, alongside more traditional sketching and model-making skills.

The programme also covers product lifecycle thinking, sustainability, and the commercial context in which design engineering operates.

The sandwich year and placement give you the opportunity to spend time in a professional engineering or product development environment before you complete your final year. This experience is invaluable for developing the practical judgement and professional awareness that employers value in graduate engineers.

Graduates work in product development, manufacturing engineering, industrial design, automotive and transport engineering, medical device development, and sustainability consultancy. Many pursue chartered engineer status with the Institution of Engineering and Technology or related bodies. Postgraduate study in design, engineering, or innovation management is an option for those seeking advanced expertise or research careers.

The programme genuinely lives up to its reputation. The best part: the cohort are bright and motivated, which makes the learning environment great. If I'm honest, accommodation allocation was stressful in the first year. On the city β€” good …

Coming here has changed how I think. The best part: small-group tutorials really push your thinking. If I'm honest, the timetable has some awkward 9am / Friday afternoon slots. On the city β€” the city is a brilliant student city with plenty …
