Diagnostic Radiography
Diagnostic radiography is the allied health profession concerned with producing medical images for the diagnosis and monitoring of disease and injury. Radiographers use X-rays, computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, ultrasound and nuclear medicine to create the images that clinicians depend on for making accurate diagnoses and guiding treatment decisions. It is a profession that requires strong scientific knowledge, technical proficiency with sophisticated imaging equipment, clinical reasoning ability and the interpersonal skills to work with patients who may be anxious, in pain or seriously ill.
At Robert Gordon University you will study diagnostic radiography over four years of full-time study, developing the in-depth knowledge, clinical practice skills and interprofessional learning experience that provide a strong foundation for a career within the health service. The programme integrates clinical placements throughout, giving you supervised experience with real patients in real imaging departments. You will study the physics of imaging modalities, anatomy and physiology, pathology, radiation safety, patient care and the technical principles of each imaging technique used in clinical practice.

On completion you will be eligible to apply for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council as a diagnostic radiographer. Graduates work across NHS trusts, private healthcare providers and independent imaging centres, in a profession that is persistently in demand. Career progression leads to specialist practice in specific imaging modalities, reporting radiography, advanced clinical practice, management and academic roles.
Many radiographers pursue postgraduate qualifications to develop specialist expertise, and the field continues to evolve as new imaging technologies and AI-assisted analysis become part of clinical practice.
