Diagnostic Radiography

Diagnostic radiography is the healthcare discipline concerned with using radiation and imaging technologies to produce the high-quality images that clinicians use to diagnose and monitor injury and disease. Radiographers are integral members of the healthcare team, operating technologies including X-ray, CT, MRI, and fluoroscopy to generate the images that underpin a huge proportion of clinical decision-making. The role requires both technical expertise with complex equipment and the interpersonal skills to work compassionately with patients who are often anxious or unwell.

At the University of Lincoln, this three-year full-time degree prepares you for registration as a diagnostic radiographer with the Health and Care Professions Council. You will develop a comprehensive understanding of radiation science, anatomy and physiology, imaging principles, and radiographic techniques, alongside the clinical judgment needed to produce the best possible images for each patient and context. Clinical placements are woven throughout the programme, ensuring that your theoretical knowledge is consistently tested and deepened in real clinical environments.

The degree is structured to ensure that upon completion you are immediately eligible to apply for HCPC registration and full membership of the Society of Radiographers. With a typical entry tariff of 104 UCAS points, the programme is accessible to students with the scientific and personal aptitude for clinical practice.

Diagnostic radiographers work across NHS hospitals, independent healthcare providers, and increasingly in community and primary care settings. The profession offers strong employment prospects given the critical importance of imaging in modern healthcare. With experience, radiographers progress into specialist roles in areas such as CT reporting, MRI, interventional radiology, and mammography, as well as into team leadership, management, and education.
