Digital media, culture, and world philosophies is a combination that places the study of contemporary media and cultural life in dialogue with the philosophical traditions of the non-Western world. Digital media and culture examines how digital technologies shape how meaning is made, distributed, and contested, and how platforms, algorithms, and content industries are transforming public life. World philosophies brings to this analysis a range of intellectual traditions, from Indian philosophy and Chinese thought to African and indigenous philosophical frameworks, that challenge Western-centric assumptions and illuminate the diversity of human ways of knowing and valuing.
At the School of Oriental and African Studies this combination reflects the institution's core commitment to the study of Asia, Africa, and the Middle East in depth and on their own terms. The three-year programme includes a foundation year, which provides a structured introduction to both subject areas before you progress to the main degree. You will engage with the analytical frameworks of digital media and cultural studies alongside philosophical traditions from across the world, exploring how different civilisations have approached questions of knowledge, ethics, social organisation, and the nature of reality.
