Digital Media & Information Studies/Archaeology

Digital media and information studies is a discipline that explores the creation, use, and impact of digital content and information in the arts, humanities, and society at large. It brings a human perspective to the issues of the digital age, examining how information is produced, curated, shared, and consumed, and what this means for knowledge, culture, and democratic participation. Archaeology, by contrast, is concerned with the material evidence of human life across deep time, using physical objects, sites, and landscapes to reconstruct the lives of people who left no written records.

Combining them creates an unusual interdisciplinary pairing with rich possibilities.

At the University of Glasgow, you will study digital media and information alongside archaeology, developing both the critical digital literacy to engage with contemporary information environments and the fieldwork, analytical, and interpretive skills to work with the physical evidence of the past. You will engage with digital humanities approaches that are increasingly transforming archaeological practice, including digital recording, geophysical survey, and online heritage presentation. The programme includes a year abroad and runs over four years full-time.

Graduates of this combination pursue careers in heritage and museums, digital communications, archive and library work, cultural heritage management, academic research, and the digital creative industries. The combination of humanistic depth and digital competency is particularly valued in organisations that manage and communicate cultural heritage in a digital age.
