Natural disasters, public health emergencies, conflict, and technological failures all have the capacity to overwhelm communities and demand rapid, coordinated responses. Disaster and emergency management is the field concerned with reducing the likelihood of such events, limiting their impact when they occur, and supporting recovery in their aftermath. It draws on planning, logistics, risk analysis, public policy, and humanitarian principles to build more resilient systems at local, national, and international levels.
At Coventry University, this three-year full-time degree prepares you to work in this complex and internationally important field. You will explore frameworks for disaster risk reduction, the principles of humanitarian relief, and the challenges of coordinating responses across governments, international agencies, and non-governmental organisations. The programme takes a genuinely global perspective, examining how crises unfold and are managed in very different political, economic, and cultural contexts.
A sandwich year placement gives you the opportunity to develop practical skills and professional experience within a relevant organisation, and a year abroad allows you to study and engage with emergency management in an international setting. Work placement activity is built into the programme, ensuring you build genuine applied competence alongside your academic study. A typical entry tariff of 104 points applies.
You will develop skills in risk assessment, strategic planning, communication under pressure, and the application of international frameworks for disaster risk reduction. The programme also addresses the ethical dimensions of humanitarian work, including questions of accountability and the protection of vulnerable populations.
Graduates go on to work with international humanitarian organisations, national emergency management agencies, local resilience forums, the military, public health bodies, and the private sector in business continuity roles.
